The book Syria - Remember Me bears witness in word and image to the strong, dignified, beautiful, and complex lives of the Syrian people—from the fertile Euphrates River Valley to the wide-open expanse of the great Syrian Desert, from the maze of overflowing markets to the spacious interiors of gold-domed mosques. The photographs in this collection were taken over two decades, between 1991 and 2011 and precede the war that now sweeps the beleaguered land.

The visual images of turmoil in Syria are all too evident in today’s mass media as news and political machinations instill a culture of fear, wittingly or unwittingly—and shockingly few images of the cultural diversity, history, and beauty of the Syrian people can be found.
Here then is an opportunity to look, to learn, and to appreciate another side of Syria through the lens of simple photographs and daily living. The Syrian people shared with me abundant generosity and hospitality; they also showed me boundless dignity, simplicity, honor, and acceptance. Within the pages of this book, let us make a conscious attempt to witness the Syrian people themselves: just look.

May reading this book be more than a dialogue of cultures,
may it be a dialogue of souls.

Photographs of Syrians 1991–2011
This book is a testament to the beauty, diversity and strength of the Syrian people whose way of life is under siege at this time in history. As the tragedy of war sweeps over this ancient culture, many of the ways of life which have been the backbone of the culture are under threat of vanishing.
In sharing these photographs, it is my intention to honor each and every one pictured and to remember through them their ancestors, a great people who have given much to the civilized world in honor, dignity, and the grace of their bearing.
